What does it take to be a stuntman?

Cape Town based stuntman, Vernon Willemse speaks to Kieno Kammies about the world of movies, particularly doing dangerous stunts.

Willemse was employed as a professional stuntman in the film ‘Lord of War’. He also featured in Death Race 3 – Inferno, the award winning _Viva Riva _and local productionNoem My Skollie.

He shares some of the experiences working on this big production and some of the risks associated with his profession.

From the time when you get the script, you have to visualise the action and once you read it, you get a sense of what the performer has to do to be successful.

Once that has been established we go and view this specific location... you as the coordinator, you have to do a risk assessment.

You have to look at every single possibility of things that can go wrong. There are measurements put in place to minimise all the possibilities of something happening to the performer.

Self management and self discipline of the performer is fundamental for their success.
