Remembering Marikana tragedy 5 years on

EWN reporter Gia Nicolaides is in Marikana on the 5th anniversary of the tragedy which claimed the lives of 34 miners, shot dead by police.

It lead to claims being made against the deputy president, Cyril Ramaphosa, and the suspension of top cop Riah Phiyega.

It is a difficult day for families of those who lost their lives and Niccolaides says it is a time for them to come together and reflect on their lost loved ones in the strike that ended in such bloodshed.

Many widows have gathered here on a stage that has been erected at the foot of the infamous koppie where the mine workers in 2012 gathered ahead of that mass shooting.

Gia Nicolaides, EWN reporter

Government settlements for families and injured mine workers are still ongoing.

The area still remains poor, she says, though Lonmin has unveiled new apartments they have built.

Despite a commission of inquiry...not much has changed for them over the last five years.
