ANC leadership contest
Stephen Grootes in conversation with ANC treasurer general about the situation within the party and current leadership contests.

The treasurer general of the ANC Dr Zweli Mkhize spoke to EWN's Stephen Grootes about the situation in the ANC.

One of the questions raised was whether the two factions currently involved in the leadership contest should reach a compromise of some sort.

Mkhize says what is currently needed is to remove the toxicity of the environment.

The objective is to unite the wider sections of the ANC ...

Dr Zweli Mkhize, ANC treasurer general

At the end, how do we make sure that the process is all embracing, so respecting, so uniting, that even those who have not necessarily succeeded with their preferred candidate still feel that the are part of the process?

Dr Zweli Mkhize, ANC treasurer general

Mkhize also commented on a court application in which part of the ANC in Kwa-Zulu Natal is legally contesting the result of the leadership elections that took place two years ago.

He says he is disappointed that a province that was doing so well could end up having such a breakdown to a point their matter is now being handled by the courts.

It is a very sad one because in the past when one was part of this there were no difficulties that could not be resolved, no issues that could not be confronted, there were no individuals that could not be corrected....

Dr Zweli Mkhize, treasurer of the ANC

We had an approach that said deal with the smoke before the flames could appear.
