COMMENT: Joburg’s waste management stink

The City of Johannesburg has to better manage its waste, 702 Breakfast host Xolani Gwala says.

With a population of almost 5 million and decreasing landfill space, the city faces major problems in the near future.

Pikitup services 1,5 million households in Joburg.

The company picks up around 6000 tonnes of waste daily, which is 1,6 million tonnes a year.

As a result, landfill spaces are completely decreasing in our city and in the not too distant future, we won’t have these spaces.

Xolani Gwala, 702 Breakfast host

The city now only has five to eight years to get rid of waste at landfill sites.
