WLC threatens legal action if Zuma doesn't dismiss Mduduzi Manana

The Women’s Legal Centre (WLC) has requested President Jacob Zuma to dismiss Deputy Minister of Higher Education and Training Mduduzi Manana, or face legal action.

Manana admitted publicly to physically assaulting a woman at a nightclub in Fourways, Johannesburg earlier this month.

We have requested the President to dismiss Manana by the 25th [of August], failing which we will bring an application.

Bronwyn Pithey, Advocate at Women's Legal Centre

WLC legal consultant Bronwyn Pithey explains that Zuma has the power to dismiss Manana in terms of section 93 of the Constitution.

The WLC will file court action against the President, if Manana is not dismissed by 25 August.

Pithey says that lack of action against Manana undermines any government-led message against on women's right and gender-based violence.

This highlights that a lot of what government says is not what government does.

What Women's Month continues to highlight is the impunity with which government acts in terms of its officials.

The WLC also intends on asking for Manana to be removed as a member of Parliament (MP), Pithey advises.

Meanwhile, the ANC says Manana will face an internal disciplinary inquiry which may see him suspended or expelled from the governing party.
