CoCT 'Water Resilience Plan' to produce 500 million litres of water per day

City of Cape Town Mayor, Patricia de Lille held a media briefing to share the City’s 'Water Resilience Plan' on Thursday. She announced new augmentation schemes which include desalination plants and aquifers which aims to produce an additional 500 million litres of water per day.

Tom Callaghan, Head of Group Business Development at GrahamTek, developed desalination technology which he has used globally except in South Africa.

Callaghan says they submitted a white paper to the City with their proposals for a rapid upscale of water supply using desalination.

We were hoping we could get a project off the back of that but they have now gone to tender which went out yesterday for fourteen megalitres through desalination mobile plants.

Callaghan says he has received the 480 paged tender document adding that they have a lot of questions which they will discuss with relevant stakeholders. There are three plants of eight, four and two megalitres explains Callaghan.

Callaghan goes on to say the tender has requested a seven week construction phase.

The concrete to produce drinkable water from seawater will be big and have power, diesel generators and where possible access to electricity.
