COMMENT: Campaign to focus on boys a good idea

Deputy President Cyril Ramaphosa’s call to establish a ‘take a boy child to work day’ is a good idea, 702 host Xolani Gwala says.

Speaking in Soshanguve at the start a series of talks on gender-based violence targeting boys and men, Ramaphosa said South Africa neglected to assist young men in our society.

He says it will help deal with issues of sexism that are prevalent in our society.

I agree with him. I think we’ve got to look at this.

Xolani Gwala, 702 breakfast host

The unintended consequence of only focusing on girls, perhaps, might be that the people who are behind such things is femicide, gender-based violence, drug abuse and misogyny, are not attended to.

Xolani Gwala, 702 breakfast host

Gwala says nobody is speaking to those people.

That campaign is not meant in any way to compete with very right campaigns to empower women in our country, who for years have been left out.
