Janusz Walus parole overturned by the Supreme Court of Appeal

In Bloemfontein, the Supreme Court of appeal has overturned a decision to grant Janus Walus parole and referred the decision back to the Justice Ministry.

In 1993 Walus killed the then leader of the South African Communist Party (SACP) Chris Hani in what he said was a plan to push the country into a race war.

Mhlekwa Nxumalo, SACP acting spokesperson, says his organisation is satisfied with the decision by the Supreme Court.

We are confident that the ninety days given to Advocate Michael Masutha, Minister of Justice and Correctional Services to make his decision is going to provide him ample time to make a decision that will benefit everyone.

Mhlekwa Nxumalo, acting spokesperson, SACP

Masutha was granted ninety days to reconsider whether Walus should be released on parole.

The issue they have been raising for the past ten years is to get Walus to tell the truth about the death of Hani rather than focusing on how much about how much time he spends behind bars, Nxumalo says.
