Who Run the World? Girls!

Rhodé Marshall is a freelance culture and entertainment writer.

As Women’s month comes to an end, there is still one event to attend – graphic designer David Tshabalala, popularly known as Slaying Goliath, new series of images titled Run the World in Joburg.

Slaying Goliath pulled together 100 photos from his three year old Instabition that profiles women – honouring one a day in his playful graphic style.

Named an Emerging Creative at the 2013 Design Indaba, Slaying Goliath is one of this city’s rising graphic artists and illustrators.

“Run The World stemmed from a bunch of requests from female friends who wanted me to illustrate them on separate occasions…” explains Slaying Goliath. “I want to profile young South African women who I consider to be the future thought leaders of South Africa. These are young women who may or may not be known under the public spotlight, yet, in each of their creative disciplined passions and careers, they illuminate a spirit of solidarity in power. Warrior women who will indeed inherit the earth.”

Some of the women featured include musician Sho Madjozi, designer Maria Mccloy and DJ Doowap.

“People usually commemorate Women’s Month by reflecting on our past and struggles, rather than the present and future, which is what I’ve done by profiling our women of today.”

About his work he says his style is forever-evolving: “I’m not influenced by current design trends. It’s very informative and leans heavily on today’s societal issues, serving as a visual narrative on current news. It’s very quirky at times and often humorous.”

The 28-year-old is also the co-founder of Suketchi, a creative and design agency that offers graphic design, product and lifestyle ranges, media, arts and events. The exhibition, which has gained quite a following shows that Slaying Goliath is not just a creative entrepreneur, but also a trendsetter that uses his work to inspire.

Run the World closes on Wednesday, 31st August 2017 7pm - 10pm at Joziburg, Johannesburg’s freshest new downtown complex at One Eloff.
