Sisulu 'happy' nephew charged for abuse

African National Congress (ANC) secretary general Gwede Mantashe’s comment that he refuses to be Cyril Ramaphosa’s deputy shows political lines are being drawn, political analyst Karima Brown says.

Nominations for a new ANC president open on 1 September ahead of the party's December policy conference.

One of the people I’ve been tracking personally is of course Lindiwe Sisulu, the minister for human settlements.

Her [Sisulu's] campaign has taken off the ground and of course, she’s coming out really strongly over the weekend in an opinion piece in the Independent stable, in which she spoke out against women abuse.

Her nephew, Shaka Sisulu, was also charged with abuse of his spouse. She says that when she learnt about it, she was happy that he was charged.

Brown says Sisulu is making all the right moves with her people believing she has good a chance as Ramaphosa.

The analyst says there could be a Sisulu-Ramaphosa ticket, but details remain to be seen.
