Rhino owner supports auction, calls for open market

A rhino owner has come out in support of a court ruling allowing the auction of horn.

The Department of Environmental Affairs had moved to ban the auction, which angered conservationists.

The North Gauteng High Court on Sunday ruled in favour of auction organiser John Hume, who runs the biggest rhino farm in the world.

The rhino owner called for the legalisation of the rhino horn trade under controlled conditions.

He says the ruling will hopefully be a start in addressing rhino horn trade in the open market, saying this could go a long way in reducing the price and scarcity issues.

That market will be supplied, even if my rhino are shot illegally.

He says rhino horn sells for R1 million per kilogramme in the black market and scarcity has pushed up prices.

It’s great to be a theorist and a bunny hugger and a tree hugger and to sit in some room and debate and deliberate on other peoples’ outcome in future.
