What happens to drugs seized by cops?

We've all seen drug busts on the news or in newspapers, where police seize huge amounts of narcotics. But what happens to those narcotics once they are in police custody?

According to Robbie Roberts, director of law enforcement at the City of Cape Town, any drug that gets seized is first handed in to the nearest police station. This is done for safe keeping.

The next step depends on what type of drugs police have.

When it is dagga, it stays at the police station. If it is mandrax, tik or something like, it gets sent immediately to the lab.

Robbie Roberts, City of Cape Town law enforcement director

Roberts says labs analyse the drugs and once the case is finalised, they destroy the drugs by burning them.
