'Safety issues go beyond Prasa's mandate'

There are concerns over the safety of Metrorail commuters and employees.

This follows incidents where employees have been robbed at gunpoint and female workers have been raped.

What measures does the company have in place to ensure the safety of its workers and passengers?

Acting Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa Acting (Prasa) CEO Lindikhaya Zide says they have been engaging with the unions and the Transport Ministry on safety issues.

He says the issue has now gone beyond their mandate and needs to be escalated with the security cluster.

Our mandate is to provide rail services. We are not in the business of security, but we do accept that the safety of our commuters is paramount.

Lindikhaya Zide, Acting Prasa CEO

We are dealing with an issue that is just beyond safety, we are dealing with the ills of the failure of social cohesion in the country.

Lindikhaya Zide, Acting Prasa CEO

Zide says it is concerning that they now have to use their budget given to run trains to deal with issues of safety.

We are currently building safety walls... we are covering our cables because it is now becoming an issue that always has an impact on our commuters.

Lindikhaya Zide, Acting Prasa CEO
