Water and Sanitation Minister Nomvula Mokonyane told Parliament that her department is being unfairly audited.
This is according to EWN reporter Lindsay Dentlinger, reporting from Parliment.
Mokonyane appeared before Parliament on Tuesday to answer why her department is running out of money.
She says a lot of irregular spending, R2.5 million is a result of municipalities and water boards not being able to do their jobs properly.
The water department is paying grants to municipalities without checking whether they can carry out the work that is expected of them, says Mokonyane.
She says in many instances the water department has to jump in to make sure that villages have water and this is why her department is incurring a lot of this debts.— Lindsay Dentlinger, EWN reporter
She revealed to Scopa that the country's municipalities are owing her department over R7 billion and unlike Eskom she can't just turn off the taps.— Lindsay Dentlinger, EWN reporter
