Inxeba movie star receives death threats over film

Inxeba (The Wound) tells the story of Xolani, a lonely factory worker, who joins the men of his community in the mountains of the Eastern Cape to initiate a group of teenage boys into manhood.

When a defiant initiate from the city discovers his best-kept secret, Xolani's entire existence begins to unravel.

The film brings to light the complex relationship between traditional patriarchy and LGBTQ identity.

Musician, actor and novelist Nakhane who takes on the lead role of Xolani, tells 702 host, Azania Mosaka that he has come under attack and is facing threats by those who are discontent with the film.

Nakhane says he finds it surprising that people are angry at the film when their anger is solely based on the trailer.

Culture evolves.

Nakhane, Musician and novelist

Nakhane says as someone who has undergone initiation is it important to speak about and question elements of the culture that are problematic.

The initiation process can be very beautiful.
