Group warns against 'fly-by-night' traditional healers involved in muti murders

The South African Healers Association has cautioned against so-called traditional healers who prey on vulnerable people to make money.

The association has denounced a man who has been arrested in connection with charges of cannibalism and murder.

A man believed to be a traditional healer walked into the local police station in KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) where he handed over body parts and told police that he's tired of being a cannibal.

The suspect then led officers to a house where more evidence was found.

The association's Dr Velaphi Mkhize the says it's bad for the country, and the reputation of African traditions and spiritual healing.

It's embarrassing, it's barbaric. It's really bad, not only for traditional healers.

To me he was not a real traditional healer.

A traditional healer is a person who gets given the healing spirits by their ancestors... I don't think that there are any ancestors who can allow you to do such horrible and bad things.

Dr Velaphi Mkhize, President and Founder of both Umsamo African Institute and South African Healers Association

Mkhize says that some people are opportunists and pose as traditional healers.

He advises that the phenomenon of 'muti murders' shows that society is living in an era of desperation.

You cannot be called to perform the ancestors duties and be expected to do these bad things.

There's no human body part which can make you rich.
