Statistician-General Pali Lehohla released the report which looked at poverty between 2006 and 2015 at a briefing in Pretoria on Tuesday.

Lehohla says that overall, the number of people living in poverty has declined since 2005 but has since 2011 has increased to 55% in 2015.

He explains that youth unemployment and flaws in the education system perpetuate poverty.

We are now seeing a difficult trend where the spikes backwards are much more severe in terms of deepening poverty.

What is disturbing is the number of children that are in poverty.

People who are worst affected are children from 0 to 17. Those from 17 to 34 cannot get jobs and poverty is reproduced in significant ways.
