A report released by UCT's centre of criminology shows that Cape Town has the highest murder rate amongst SA's top nine cities.

The Institute of Safety Governance and Criminology at UCT has released The State of Urban Safety Report in collaboration with South African Cities Network (SACN).

The report looks into crime hotspots and the causes behind this in South Africa's top nine cities.

Co-director of UCT's Institute of Safety Governance and Criminology, Guy Lamb, says the available data tends to focus on crime at the national or provincial level, while this report focuses mainly on cities to help mayors deal with these crimes.

The idea was to do something that provides city level data and analysis that is helpful.

Guy Lamb, Co-director of UCT's Institute of Safety Governance and Criminology

According to Lamb, the research made use of data that Saps makes available annually to look at trends in certain areas.

It looked at trends over the past 10 years.

Of the nine cities they looked at, Cape Town has the highest murder rate, says Lamb.

Lamb says the research has shown that the high murder rate is attributed to gang violence and the availability of fire arms to these gangs. There are about ten places in the Cape where these murders are taking place, mostly on the Cape Flats.
