Latest Glebelands murder brings death toll to 93

On Tuesday night, a man was gunned down and killed at Glebelands Hostel in Umlazi, Durban. This murder brings the death toll linked to the infamous hostel to 93 since 2014.

EWN Reporter, Ziyanda Ngcobo, says that while police have stated the motive for the murder is unclear, it is difficult not to link it to ongoing political violence in the province.

This notion is strengthened by the ongoing Moerane Commission of Inquiry, which is investigating political killings in KwaZulu Natal. The commission came about after independent researcher Vanessa Burger implicated the police and politicians in the sourcing of their hitmen from Glebelands.

A lot of the murders that have taken place since March 2014, have largely been linked to politics and the web between politicians, police and the hit men themselves. We've also heard that Glebelands is the place where hit men live.

Ziyanda Ngcobo, EWN Reporter

Ngcobo says that it is believed that the man who was killed could have been a witness in one of the cases regarding the murders at Glebelands or the hit men who live there. Three weeks ago, a murder took place and there were similar speculations, she adds.

It is unclear how the commission will respond to this incident. Ngcobo says that in the past murders have taken place while hearings for the commission were held. The commission visited the hostel afterward. This was not the first time a murder took place during a political event.

It is alarming that all these killings are taking place while there is a commission of inquiry. It begs the question, how effective is this commission going to be with dealing with these murders? Some are saying this is effectively showing the commissioners they are powerless.

Ziyanda Ngcobo, EWN Reporter

A satellite police station has been set up, but Ngcobo says due to the structure of the complex, with narrow corridors and poor lighting, it is difficult for them to be effective.
