Ex-cop Rodrigues should face murder charge - Timol lawyer

Former sergeant Jan Rodrigues should be investigated and prosecuted on charges of murder for his role in Timol's death, family lawyer Advocate Howard Varney told the court on Thursday.

A new inquest into the death of anti-apartheid activist Ahmed Timol kicked off at the High Court in Johannesburg in June.

Timol's death was ruled a suicide after he fell to his death from the tenth floor of what was then John Vorster Square, now the Johannesburg Central Police Station.

His family believe his death was not a suicide, but that he was tortured and thrown or pushed from the building.

Varney told the court that communists like Timol were given literature to read to be prepared for detention and how to cope with harsh interrogations.

One of these books was called _Notes from the Gallows _by Julius Fučík.

Ahmed and his comrades lived for happiness - for that they went to battle, for that they died. Let grief never be connected with their names.

Like thousands of other communists, Ahmed Timol died so that men and women may be free.

Questions remain why the government failed to go after people who didn't apply for amnesty after apartheid.
