Chief Justice Mogoeng Mogoeng Honoured with Lead SA Leadership Award

In 2017, Lead SA Launched "Living the Constitution". A campaign to showcase aspects of the document; highlight the work of civil society organisations working to promote the rights and values that are enshrined in the Constitution and celebrate some of the heroes who contributed to the creation of our democracy. The intent of the campaign is to celebrate the achievements of our democracy and to reflect on the work we still have to do.

With this in mind, Lead SA selected Chief Justice Mogoeng Mogoeng, as the 2017 Leadership Award recipient. Mogoeng is the Chief Justice of the Constitutional Court of South Africa, a position he has held since 2011. In previous years the award has gone to Gift of the Givers founder, Imtiaz Sooliman, and the then Public Protector, Advocate Thuli Madonsela.

Chief Justice Mogoeng is outspoken about constitutional rights, most recently, the right to a secret ballot in Parliament, during the vote of no confidence for President Jacob Zuma, in August.

In October 2016, speaking at the Oliver Tambo memorial lecture in Newtown in Johannesburg, the Chief Justice made it clear that the judiciary plays a central role in maintaining stability in South Africa and all South Africans must respect and obey its ruling.

He slammed the leaders who put self-interest before those of the people and said that no leader should be totally secure in his position.

"You must be afraid of any leader who is prepared to do anything to become a leader. Let us be wary of any person in our midst who has fallen in love with position and power."

"In celebration of your exceptional leadership and to mark the occasion of 20 years of our constitution, it is my privilege to call on the honourable Chief Justice of South Africa."

Omar Essack, Primedia Broadcasting CEO

In his absence, the award was received by Chief Justice spokesman, Nathi Mncube during the third annual Lead SA Changemakers Conference held at the Gibs Business Centre in Johannesburg.

Recently, Chief Justice Mogoeng Mogoeng took over as the new chancellor for the University of Kwa-Zulu Natal, a post he will hold for the next four years.
