"McBride's daughter alleges assault has been ongoing for two years"
Independent Police Investigative Directorate (Ipid) head Robert McBride is being accused of assault by his 15-year-old daughter who claims that he beat her and tried to strangle her last Sunday.
McBride says he will cooperate fully with the investigation and has released a detailed statement over the weekend explaining his actions. Ipid believes the assault case is the work of crime intelligence operatives.
EWN reporter, Mandy Wiener broke the story for Eyewitness News. She reports that in his statement, issued on Saturday evening, McBride admitted to admonishing his daughter but refuted claims that he assaulted her.
He says he did so because he was concerned about her school marks that had been dropping, her rebellious behaviour as well as a letter he had found which suggested she was involved in less than savoury issues.Mandy Wiener, EWN reporter
Then it gets complicated because McBride then addressed the complainant, who is a woman he has known for some time - and is known and has a history of opening frivolous cases against him, and that she may be connected to former acting national police commissioner Khomotso Phahlane.Mandy Wiener, EWN reporter
Weiner reports that Ipid suggests the assault case against McBride forms part of 'Operation Wonder' which is a crime intelligence campaign to smear McBride's name with hopes to have him removed from office by the 'big three'. The 'big three' are known as Lieutenant-general Berning Ntlemeza, Khomotso Phahlane and suspended Crime Intelligence boss Richard Mdluli.
Weiner sat down and interviewed McBride's daughter where she shares her story, saying this is in no way part of a smear campaign.
