[LISTEN] Teacher shares her ordeal of being taunted by school pupils

*Sarah is a teacher based in Cape Town says she has suffered unspeakable emotional abuse at the hands of her learners.

She says when she studied to become a teacher she was taught to inspire and guide learners. Sarah says there is no respect for teachers at the school she works at.

But when you're put in a situation where learners write defamatory statuses about you on school property and books, saying exceptionally insulting thing about you, it makes you see things differently and wonder what is going on with learners today.

Sarah, teacher

They have no respect. They think its a joke and don't realise that this changes your perception of teaching and it hurts.

Sarah, teacher

I've had people tell me I shouldn't let this get to me, but this type of behaviour from pupils leaves many teachers demoralised.

Sarah explains that she's also experienced tremendous shock over derogatory sexual remarks made towards her and has asked herself why the pupils who were taunting her were allowed to get away with their malicious behaviour.

She says she reached out and approached the principal but says the matter wasn't dealt with as seriously as it should have been. She says the learner responsible was merely given a warning and gave her a half-hearted apology.

Jessica Shelver Spokesperson for Education MEC Debbie Schafer at Western Cape Government tells CapeTalk host, Kieno Kammies she is horrified and shocked at the treament Sarah received from pupils and schools headmaster.

In a case like this, the school's governing body needs to take action against the learners once they have been identified, she adds.
