Environmentalists argue for rhino farming, defend local rhino baron

Former game ranger and head of the renowned Natal Parks Board, Dr George Hughes has defended local rhino baron John Hume and his efforts to multiply the species.

Hughes says Hume is one of the most successful rhino farmers the country has seen and should be lauded for creating a population of real significance.

Environmental writer Tony Carnie has more on the story.

You have this really polarised debate where the non-trade people say on one side it will lead to a bottomless pit of demand, and then people in favor of trade saying how much worse can it get?

Tony Carnie, environmental writer

What Dr Hughes is saying is that you have to look at it from a less emotional point of view, also there is an escape hatch that if you do try it and it doesn't work you can stop it.
