Taxi associations put the brakes on feud

Gauteng Community Safety MEC Sizakele Nkosi-Malobane has threatened to close the Vlakfontein route if taxi associations operating there don’t agree to immediate peace.

A gunfight broke out on Tuesday between the Ennerdale and Lawley associations over the Vlakfontein route.

One person died while another was critically wounded.

Nkosi-Malobane met with both associations on Wednesday and said it went well after both parties committed to signing a peace deal.

Those are the two associations that have permission to operate in that route.

She said there was never any previous conflict over this particular route.

Meanwhile, the MEC says neither of the two associations have the right to operate from the Mall of the South.

Nkosi-Malobane goes on to say that, at a later stage, a bidding process will be initiated for both associations, which will determine who may or may not operate on the Mall of the South route.
