Godi calls for probe into Treasury's failed pay system

National Treasury allegedly wasted over R1 billion on an integrated financial management system, which was never implemented after more than a decade.

The project was meant to amalgamate all of government's payment systems.

Former Finance Minister Pravin Gordhan responded to the allegations.

He says this is an attempt to discredit and launch attacks on him "through the abuse of state institutions on those opposed to corruption".

Gordhan says he is a politician and as politicians, they don't implement financial management systems.

He says this is the work of civil servants.

Standing Committee on Public Accounts (Scopa) chairperson Themba Godi says whatever civil servants are doing, it's done to fulfill a political agenda.

He maintains that projects as big as the financial management system should be a high on the agenda of any minister.

Godi says while the project failed to integrate government's financial systems, parts thereof were used by National Treasury and the Department of Public Service and Administration.

In terms of achieving what government wanted, it was not realised.

Themba Godi, Scopa Chairperson

Godi says they have agreed that there should be a forensic investigations to pinpoint who should be held accountable.

He says the probe should focus from consultants to officials who were monitoring them, to managers as well as politicians who were in charge at the time.
