Hawks deny reviving charges against Pravin Gordhan

Former finance minister Trevor Manuel and his deputy Jabu Moleketi have been summoned by the Hawks to submit an affidavit about their role in establishing an investigations unit at Sars.

There have been reports that the Hawks are also trying to initiate investigations into former finance minister Pravin Gordhan in relation to the same unit.

EWN reporter, Barry Bateman says he spoke to the Hawks spokesperson Hangwani Mulaudzi, who says there is no truth to reports that they are trying to initiate charges against Gordhan.

He says they obtained a directive from the National Prosecuting Authority to obtain further information from the two ministers who have been given the subpoena as they want to close the chapter on this issue.

According to Bateman the investigative unit was established between 2007 - 2008 and is said to have involved the bugging of the NPA offices by two Sars officials and the unit was dubbed 'Project Sunday Evenings'.

The allegation is that this unlawful investigation unit at Sars was spying on the NPA.
