Farmers cautioned to vaccinate against bird flu

24 cases of Avian Flu have been detected since an outbreak of the disease in June.

The Departement of Agriculture confirmed the news on Wednesday.

The H5 N8 strain of the virus is said to be highly pathogenic for poultry and is costing the local industry millions of rand.

Thousands of chickens have been culled and their eggs destroyed.

The poultry industry has asked government to roll out a vaccine for the highly pathogenic H5 N8 strain.

The National Institute for Communicable Diseases, Dr Cheryl Cohen says humans are not at risk.

This virus has never ever been described to cause disease in humans.

Cohen says controlling the outbreak is challenging.

Control is challenging. But the mainstay of control in birds is, unfortunately, culling the birds because once the flock is infected there is no other way to stop the infection.
