Gender violence in the Spotlight

Gender specialist counters Susan Shabangu: 'Violence against women is a crisis'

Minister Responsible for Women in the Presidency Susan Shabangu says violence against women is not a crisis but a challenge that must be tackled.

Shabangu made the remarks on Wednesday afternoon while speaking at the launch of new research by the Centre For the Study of Violence And Reconciliation together with Oxfam in Johannesburg on Wednesday.

Nonhlanhla Sibanda-Moyo, Gender Specialist at Centre for the Study of Violence & Reconciliation (CSVR) disagrees with Shabangu adding that the study launched on Wednesday is titled 'Violence against women: A country in crisis'.

Until we look at violence against women as a crisis then we will never be able to fully address it.

The statistics speak for themselves. At least three women are killed in South Africa daily by an intimate partner. In reality we are in a crisis.

Nonhlanhla Sibanda-Moyo, Gender Specialist at Centre for the Study of Violence & Reconciliation

Sibanda-Moyo explains that their study seeks to explore why violence against women persists in the country and what measures need to be taken to address it.

Some of the findings confirm that violence is an everyday experience for a lot of women in South Africa adds Sibanda-Moyo.

Women experience violence at different stages of their lives and they also face violence and discrimination based on their sexuality, on their race and economic status.

Sibanda-Moyo says a department or institution within government is needed to take charge and show leadership in coordinating all efforts to tackle gender based violence.
