Mowbray learners want teacher accused of sexual assault out

A teacher that appeared in court on a sexual assault charge must be removed from the school as pupils don't feel safe around him, learners at Thandokhulu High School in Mowbray are demanding.

CapeTalk's Kieno Kammies spoke to one of the learners who explained their concerns with the presence of this educator.

She said they chatted with the principal who told them that his powers were limited and only the School Governing Body was able to make those kind of decisions.

We demand the teacher be removed from the school. In fact, he should not teach anymore because we don't know what he will do if he was to be transferred to another school.

Western Cape Education Department spokesperson Paddy Attwell says the teacher is not at school and will be off for the coming three weeks.

This while officials conduct investigations.

He says in order for them to take action against this teacher, they need evidence from at least two learners but unfortunately they declined to become witnesses.

The teacher hasn't been found guilty by the courts but we can assure the learners that he has been removed from the premises.
