Cosatu to strike over state capture, corruption & exploitation

The Congress of South African Trade Unions (Cosatu) claims it's fighting public and private sector corruption in equal measure.

The federation announced it would lead a nationwide strike against state capture and corruption on 27 September.

It says it will raise awareness about the exploitation of workers by shutting down economic sectors in the country's provinces.

Cosatu General-Secretary Bheki Ntshalintshali says they want to raise the consciousness of South Africans.

He says unless there is a collective attempt to tackle corruption, the country will go down the drain.

We have been downgraded, the cost of borrowing is growing, over 20 000 people in the mining sector may lose their jobs.

Bheki Ntshalintshali, Cosatu SG

At the same time, we've heard that there is about R700 billion sitting in the banks of business and on the investment side, clearly there is something wrong. It is in that context that state capture and the state of our economy affects the state of the poor the most.

Bheki Ntshalintshali, Cosatu SG

Ntshalintshali calls on business, faith-based organisations and civil society to stand up against corruption and state capture.
