Ponte remains an iconic structure on the Jozi skyline

Rhodé Marshall, a freelance culture and entertainment writer, takes us into one of Gauteng’s most controversial buildings, Ponte City.

Once the tallest building in the country and one of the most desirable addresses, all 54 floors of Ponte City have subjugated Joburg’s skyline since 1975.

Ponte has been the subject of books, well-known photographers, as well as appearing in hit movies such as District 9.

The building is symbolic, strangely beautiful and has been part of an inner-city renaissance in recent years, as many buildings and areas that were previously seen as no-go zones have been turned into gourmet food markets, artists’ studios and trendy apartments.

Now home to up to 3000 middle and working-class folks including young professionals, students, and immigrants, Ponte is still one of the city’s most important iconic residential skyscrapers.
