MPs put forward 12 names for new SABC board

Parliamentarians have finalised their list of 12 recommended candidates to serve on the SABC board.

Parliament’s portfolio committee on communications short-listed candidates and conducted interviews last week.

The committee will now submit the report to the National Assembly for adoption before it is sent to President Jacob Zuma, reports EWN's Rahima Essop.

The President will appoint the chairperson and depurty chairperson [of the board].

Below are the 12 names:

  • Khanyisile Kweyama (chair of the last interim board)
  • Mathatha Tsedu
  • Michael Markovitz
  • Nomvuyiso Batyi
  • Rachel Kalidass
  • Victor Rambau
  • John Matisonn
  • Jack Phalane
  • Febe Potgieter-Gqubule
  • Krish Naidoo
  • Dinkwanyane Mohuba
  • Bongumusa Makhathini

The new board is expected to oversee the affairs of the public broadcaster once the five-member interim board’s term ends later this month.

Four of the candidates on the new recommended board served on the interim board, Essop explains.

EFF MP Mbuyiseni Ndlozi expressed disappointment that there are only for women recommended to the board.

Ndlozi said he hoped that there would be a female chairperson, similar to the interim board that was led by Khanyisile Kweyama.

Opposition MPs had debated the inclusion of Krish Naidoo and Febe Potgieter-Gqubule due to their close links to the ANC.
