Latest GDP driven by agriculture not so bright for the jobs sector - economist

While agriculture has helped boost South Africa's GDP by 2.5%, economists suggest the sector is not out of the woods.

The sector has expanded by 33.6% making it the biggest contributor.

On Tuesday, Finance Minister Malusi Gigaba warned that poverty, unemployment, and inequality underpinned by slow growth remain the main challenges to the economy.

The National Treasury has welcomed South Africa breaking from a technical recession but warns it's still too early to predict whether there will be sustained growth.

Clement Manyathela, standing in for Stephen Grootes, spoke to agricultural economist Wandile Sihlobo.

It paints a good picture of the performance and I think that this is going to be carried out throughout the year. I think this year food inflation will average around 7.4% which is pretty good because we had double digit numbers last year.

On the aspect of jobs, sadly it has not been bright on that side, mainly because of where this production is happening, we have seen it on the grain-related side, but in horticulture, it hasn't been bright particularity in the Western Cape.

Sohlobo says the focus needs to be placed on labor intensive sectors within the agri-space.
