Zweli Mkhize outlines presidential plans

ANC Treasurer General Zweli Mkhize has outlined his plans should he be elected president during the ruling party’s elective conference in December.

He has for the first time admitted he is ready to serve and accept nominations from branches who want him to be the next ANC leader.

It’s always humbling and an honour to be asked to serve at whatever level... At this point, I can say I am ready to be part of the leadership and I’ll be ready to serve.

Mkhize, speaking to stand-in host Clement Manyathela on The Midday Report, outlined his areas of priority should he become president.

Going forward, we need to focus on the unity of the party, the renewal of the party and ensuring the integrity of the leadership of the party so that the ANC can revive confidence and inspire more confidence from our people.

It is important for us to focus on strengthening governance, ensuring clean governance, ensuring that we fight against corruption and ensuring there is efficiency in service delivery in government.

I also believe we need to build a vibrant economy where radical economic transformation will ensure inclusivity and the broadening of participation, that we have growth and that we have job creation to fight poverty and eliminate inequality.

On possible smear campaigns against Deputy President Cyril Ramaphosa, Mkhize says the issues raised are private matters.

I think what’s important for us is to focus on the hard issues that the country is confronted with. We must focus on the choices that our people have to make and what people begin to offer as a way to solve the challenges facing our country.

Speaking about state capture, he called for the process to move faster.

Political analyst Professor Lesiba Teffo says Mkhize has come into the fold late.

He wouldn’t stand a chance [at this late stage].

Teffo says he wouldn’t be surprised to see others put up their hand and pull out at the last minute.
