Is DA coalition in danger of collapsing?

Are the coalitions in some of the country's municipalities in danger of falling apart?

In Nelson Mandela Bay, there have been differences between the Democratic Alliance (DA) and United Democratic Movement (UDM) following the voting out of Mongameli Bobani as Deputy Mayor in the Metropolitan.

Now, there are apparent differences between the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF). The red berets have warned that they will boycott all council meetings at DA-led municipalities, apparently in support of the UDM.

Stephen Grootes, standing in for Xolani Gwala, spoke to Dr Ivor Sarakinsky, senior lecturer at the Wits University School of Governance about what this means.

Sarakinsky says the 'turbulence' created in council may translate into indecision and an inability to perform.

Because you have changes in policy, priority and flip flopping... It resonates right through the whole bureaucracy which has to do the work.

You need some structure and what we are lacking in our municipal arrangement is some way of encouraging coalitions to have a stronger foundation.

Dr Ivor Sarakinsky, Senior Lecturer at the Wits University School of Governance

He suggests a new way of forming coalitions.

What I would argue for is not just proportional representation voting but you have in term of the number of seats in council, you invite parties to be represented on the executive councils pro rata.

Dr Ivor Sarakinsky, Senior Lecturer at the Wits University School of Governance

That would give all the parties a vested interest in staying in the arrangement without having to depend on the vagaries of coalition politics.
