SA's first ParaVolley team heading to African Championships

The South Africa's ParaVolley team's captain Garth Spencer-Smith, coach Anton Raimondo and player Simon Chabangu spoke to CapeTalk's Kieno Kammies about their first international game. Theyhey will face off some of the Africa's greatest teams at the African Championships in Rwanda.

Team coach Anton Raimondo says the sport is fairly new, and only began about three years ago. They have been working hard to reach a standard to compete at an international level.

Simon Chabangu, who joined the national team from Limpopo, says the sport helps take a lot of teenagers in Limpopo off the streets.

Spencer-Smith says he is hoping to that this will be a good game for everyone because they haven't played on international grounds before.

The team will compete against some of Africa’s best teams, including Rwanda, Egypt, and Kenya.

We certainly hope to give everybody a good game and come home with a number of victories.

Garth Spencer-Smith, the team's Captain

Funding has been a major challenge for the team. According to Raimondo, they have tried to knock on many doors as possible but it has proven to be an impossible mission thus they have to dig deeper into their own pockets.

For this team, the players have contributed where they can and I have taken the lion's share of the costs ...

Anton Raimondo, Team coach
