UJ Soweto campus launches gender-neutral bathroom pilot

How do you feel about sharing public bathrooms with people of the opposite gender?

We commonly share bathrooms in our homes says host of The Afternoon Drive with Bongani Bingwa.

The University of Johannesburg (UJ) has introduced gender-neutral toilets as the recognition of more than two gender identities has grown.

Mpume Hlatshwayo, Transformation Director, University of Johannesburg refers to the Bill of Rights, as a directive for introducing gender neutral bathrooms to respect the rights of their students' gender.

Hlatshwayo explains that this is another way for the university towards creating safe zones. She goes on to say they have used their Soweto campus as a pilot project.

The response is positive although we need to increase our awareness campaigns before officially launching the campaign fully.
