We make better parenting choices when we are energised and worse choices when we are tired and stressed says creative parenting expert Nikki Bush. She adds that this alone is a good enough reason for parents to take better care of themselves in the last quarter of the year.
Bush and 702 host, Phemelo Motene discussed some strategies to avoid parent burnout in the last quarter of the year.
Bush says the concept of 'super parents' is a myth and adds that parents find it extremely difficult to find time to take care of themselves and their emotional wellbeing.
The signs of parent burn out are when you are feeling totally cynical, frustrated and resentful. It's when you are exhausted to a point where you withdraw emotionally and detaching yourself from your children and when you are feeling ineffective, like you aren't doing anything very well in your life.— Nikki Bush, Creative parenting expert
Bush says parents need to realise that less is more and warns against cramming more in when they feel down and out. She advises parents and especially mothers to sometimes stop and take a step back.

Take a break, take yourself out for coffee every now and then says Bush. She goes on to say it is also better to connect with other parents, creating networks that you can call on for help when feeling overwhelmed or down.

Bush says you cannot give love if your cup is empty.
