I cannot be an absent father, an absent husband - Mthembu

African National Congress (ANC) chief whip Jackson Mthembu is considering retiring from politics but only until the party is able to self-correct.

Mthembu says he is considering an exit at a national level because he needs more time with his family.

He has shared some of his regrets with Stephen Grootes, standing in for Xolani Gwala, and details how he believes he could have been a better father and husband.

After the conference, after we have put in a collective leadership that will save our movement. I am indeed prepared to consider whether I should not step down and have some time with my family.

Jackson Mthembu, ANC Chief Whip

1991 when we had the December conference of the ANC, immediately after that I divorced. It was linked to the political environment, a life I have lived ever since... I have never been with my family for a very long period which culminated in me losing my first wife.

Jackson Mthembu, ANC Chief Whip

Speaking on his son's drug addiction, Mthembu admits he has been an absent father and wants to do better.

Revolutionaries also take care of their families. They take care of their wives.

Jackson Mthembu, ANC Chief Whip

I cannot be an absent father, an absent husband notwithstanding the things some of us are expected to do for the revolution but the revolution expects me to be a good husband too, a good father too.

Jackson Mthembu, ANC Chief Whip

He says good leadership is needed in order to deal with some of the challenges the ruling party is currently facing and insists that state capture must be dealt with in order to bring credibility to the movement.

Mthembu has also condemned what he says is the character assassination of Deputy President Cyril Ramaphosa claims of infidelity.

One will be rooting for Cyril Ramaphosa of course, he has been committed already, to dealing with all the challenges we are faced with including challenges of state capture.

Jackson Mthembu, ANC Chief Whip

We need good quality of leaders not tainted by state capture, not tainted by corruption.

Jackson Mthembu, ANC Chief Whip

I never thought that people can go this low in trying to character assassinate the reputation of a competitor. People have hit comrade Cyril below the belt.
