Mkhwebane's spokesperson says nothing sinister about Zuma and SSA meeting

Public Protector Busisiwe Mkhwebane has defended her meetings with the Presidency and the State Security Agency (SSA).

On Tuesday, Eyewitness News published details contained in a new affidavit filed by the South African Reserve Bank's legal services in the High Court in Pretoria on Monday.

Sarb has accused Mkhwebane of conspiring with the Presidency and the SSA to attack the central bank and undermine its authority.

Records show that the proposed remedial action to change the Constitution was discussed.

The bank says the mentioned discussions with the Presidency destroy the Public Protector’s independence.

Denying any wrongdoing, the Public Protector's spokesperson, Cleopatra Mosana, says the hand writing alleged to be that of Mkhwebane in a note titled "Meeting with SSA,”, can be disputed.

Unless you can prove it beyond reasonable doubt it is not the handwriting of Advocate Busisiwe Mkhwebane.

Cleopatra Mosana, spokesperson

Those notes were part of the scribble notes part of the investigation, those are not Advocate Busiwswe Mkhwebane's hand writing.

Cleopatra Mosana, spokesperson

Mosana says there is nothing that restricts Mkhwebane from meeting with the Presidency and that Mkhwebane's independence is being undermined.

It is not that this meeting was something sinister, it is not something that could not be done. It is just that the Presidency needed clarity based on the correspondence [about the CIEX report] that Advocate Mkhwebane had written to the Presidency.

Cleopatra Mosana, spokesperson

This is a diversion from a well orchestrated issue where people are trying to undermine the independence of the public protector.

Cleopatra Mosana, spokesperson

Mosana says a responding affidavit from the Public Protector's office will be filed on 23 September.
