Andile Gumbi plays Ezekiel Dlamini in King Kong

One of the most iconic musicals to come out of the country has come home to Johannesburg.

Over 50 years ago, King Kong - The Musical, was performed for the first time at the Wits University Great Hall before going international, reaching stages such as London's West End.

On Tuesday night, King Kong had its opening night at the Joburg Theatre.

It will run until 8 October.

The play tells the story of heavyweight fifties boxing champion Ezekiel Dlamini whose self-appointed ring name was "King Kong".

Stephen Grootes, standing in for Xolani Gwala, spoke to Andile Gumbi, the lead character.

It was an amazing era, the story is a very deep story that teaches a lot of people how to manage and understand the power you posses as individuals.
