Any true eKasi kid would know what a kota is. The stuffed quarter bread remains a favourite comfort food for many townships.
To celebrate its importance, Soweto-born Sidwell Tshingilane decided to start the Soweto Kota Festival.
Taking place on Saturday, 16 September and Sunday, 17 September, the fun family day will showcase 30 vendors who will be putting their remarkable kota-making talents to good use.
The two-day event will take place at the Soweto Theatre with an expectancy of about 3000 people in attendance each day.
According to the event’s Facebook page, the event aims to bring together food lovers of kotas, called s’phatlho in Pretoria, iskhambane in the Vaal area and bunny chow in Durban.
Kotas are filled with extras like ham, egg, lettuce and even burger fillings on top of the standard chips, atchar and vienna combos.
The organisers say that the idea to have this festival was sparked when someone complained to the founder of this event about how they went to another event in Soweto and there was not a kota in sight.
If you’re keener on a healthy meal, the event will also introduce the “healthiest” kota in Gauteng through the Healthy Kota Challenge – this is to encourage suppliers to reduce salt and oil.
Something fun and interesting to watch is Chef Dee showing the most amusing kota ever… the Roadkill Kota! It’s important to flatten a kota – for obvious reasons. So some like to press it against a flat surface like a table. Others like to stomp on it with their feet. But Chef Dee chooses the unique approach of driving over it with her hardy red Land Cruiser.

Tickets to the first Soweto Kota Festival cost R50 for adults and R20 for children. There will be special prices for those who want a VIP experience at the event.
