Publishers speaks out: What went wrong with Bonang Matheba's book

Local TV personality Bonang Matheba's book, Bonang: From A to B will be relaunched after it was pulled from Exclusive Books shelves and heavily criticised for its poor grammar.

Thabiso Mahlape, publisher at Blackbird Books spoke to 702 host Azania Mosaka about what transpired and what went wrong.

As the publisher, Mahlape took most of the heat from critics. She adds that she takes poor reviews quite badly but has had to 'face the music' and get over it.

To have Bonang who is the author, hold my hand through was quite something.

Mahlape goes on to say what also made the criticism worse was that some of it felt personal and no longer about the work. Mahlape believes, in hindsight, a lot of the criticism was unfair.

I take full responsibility for what happened. The last thing I want is for black people to be accused of mediocrity.

If audio books were a thing in this country, I would have published one, especially with her voice.

Twitter users and readers also pointed out that there was an error in Bonang's birthday which was published as 24 June, when it is 25 June. Mahlape admits this was a mistake she made and was only picked up after the book was sent to the publishers.

From A to B was always meant to be written in a conversational style, she explains.
