CT's Open Book Fest was a hit (and bestseller Sara-Jayne King has the receipts)

CapeTalk presenter Sara-Jayne King attended the Open Book Festival this month, where she debuted her memoir, Killing Karoline.

Killing Karoline is now on the Exclusive Books best-seller list and King shared her experience of the festival.

For a book lover, there can be no two more glorious words in the dictionary than 'Book Festival'.

This year’s Open Book Festival was no exception.

Meeting other book lovers comes with its own, unique frisson, holding the same promise as a Tinder date where it’s guaranteed both parties are into romantic walks along the beach, hiking in the Cederburg and binge-watching Mad Men.

Book people are a tribe, we are drawn together by something inherent in all of us.

My own book baby, Killing Karoline, was, after much pushing (on my part )and pulling (on the part of my publisher Melinda Ferguson) delivered at the beginning of August and nowhere was I more delighted to take her on her virgin outing that at Cape Town’s Open Book Festival.

A mercifully diverse, amalgam of writers, poets, social commentators and fellow book people giving of themselves to a buzzing and hungry crowd of those who have unashamedly found themselves admitting, “My name is so- and-so, and I’m a book addict.”

Authors Pumla Dineo Gqola (Reflecting Rogue), Lindiwe Hani (Being Chris Hani’s Daughter) and Sizwe-Mpofu Walsh (Democracy and Delusion) in particular had me fangirling like a 12-year old at a Justin Bieber concert.

In fact, so fabulous was my experience at Open Book this month, that I’ve already started working on Book.No.2 in order to secure myself an invitation next year. Hope to see you there!
