Zeitz MOCAA opens this week (and it's free on Heritage weekend)

After years of preparation, the The Zeitz Museum of Contemporary Art Africa (MOCAA) is opening this week. The museum has the potential to be as much of an attraction as Table Mountain.

David Green, CEO at V&A Waterfront, says that The Zeitz MOCAA houses about 100 galleries within it. He adds that it will be opening on Friday at 11 am with over 300 pieces of art on exhibition.

We've re purposed the iconic Silo Buildings, that are about 100 years old. We wanted that building to be celebrated publicly.

Green says they hope the building will handle 800 - 900 people at a time.

He adds that the Zeitz is not just for international tourists, it is a museum everyone can enjoy and hopes to draw locals as well.

To celebrate the opening, Green says that throughout heritage weekend (22 to 25 September 2017) access to the Zeitz will be free.

Right from the outset we wanted this to be something that is accessible.
