Joburg's new cool comedy club

Does a pretty coffee shop out front and a fully-fledged comedy club in the back work?

In this case absolutely yes! This well-thought-out venue (opened May 2016) is the brainchild of local comedian greats Goliath and Goliath - well actually four Goliaths; Jason, Donovan, Nicholas and Kate, bringing a whole lot more laughter to Johannesburg.

Known for their exceptional stand-up as well as for their talent in organising comedy nights, this clever venture in the heart of the upscale shopping and lifestyle precinct Melrose Arch is the place the Goliaths had long dreamed of. It is a dedicated comedy club, promoting the best of the South African scene – named the Goliath Comedy Club and Roast Cafe.

With the comedy club open Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights and the cafe a daytime venture, the spot is a popular stop for light lunches and evening drinks. And it's fast becoming popular almost as much for its cakes as much its entertainment.

Shows start at 8pm and features a showcase of six local comedians each assigned about 10 minutes to draw the laughs with an interval halfway through.

Hosts and guests are set to change regularly, but if you happen to see Mpho Popps and other friends of the Goliaths on the bill then don't think twice about coming down. The ease with which the comedians draw the laughs at the venue shows how when artists own their own, everyone is exceptional.

The club was opened in partnership with television channel Comedy Central and the Goliaths hope to also attract international acts in addition to local favourites. And they also aim to promote a variety of comedy genres, not just classic stand-up.

While on tour in SA recently, even Trevor Noah jumped on stage to entertain guests and celebrate the success of his peers. You never know what might happen…

The Goliaths envisaged the club as a hub for the local comedy scene, the kind of place where regulars congregate and new stars are born.

As creative director Donovan Goliath says he wants people to love being there, “… and just really feel like they're part of the family.”
