The Moerane Commission of Inquiry is continuing to determine those who are involved and responsible for political killings in KwaZulu-Natal.
Mxoleleni Bhani has become the first person convicted for a Glebelands Hostel related murder since the spate of violence began in Umlazi.
On Friday Bhani was sentenced to life for the murder of a Glebelands resident Sipho Ndovela.
Vanessa Burger, Independent Community Activist for Human Rights & Social Justice has been involved in the case. She says Ndovela gave her an uncommissioned statement shortly before he was killed.
Ndovela was very concerned because he had implicated the late war lord in the a murder for another man for whom he was witness in the murder case, for which he was killed.— Vanessa Burger, Independent Community Activist for Human Rights & Social Justice
Novela's investigating officer in that instance had informed him to omit certain information from the statement as irrelevant. The same investigating officer was accompanying Sipho to court on the day he was killed.— Vanessa Burger, Independent Community Activist for Human Rights & Social Justice
Burger says they want to know the police's role in the killing. She goes on to say it is difficult to take this forward as it appears there is a cover up.
The police task team are doing a sterling job and it is great that a first conviction has been made.— Vanessa Burger, Independent Community Activist for Human Rights & Social Justice
It is important that political leaders do testify says Burger, adding that she doubts that there will be much honesty because there is a distinct lack of accountability.
