Former President of South Africa, Kgalema Motlanthe sat down for a lengthy and candid interview with 702 and CapeTalk anchor, Eusebius McKaiser. Motlanthe served as president of South Africa between 25 September 2008 and 9 May 2009, following the resignation of Thabo Mbeki.
Motlanthe says the assumptions that a few African National Congress (ANC) elders have been accused and harshly criticised of only finding their backbone only after exiting the political stage are untrue.
As a former President, convention also dictates I must not be seen to be to critical of the incumbent. The fact that I am speaking out is a clear indication of the deep crisis we are in.— Kgalema Motlanthe, Former President of South Africa
Jacob Zuma is now a metonym. He is the ANC and the ANC is him. The two are inseparable.— Kgalema Motlanthe, Former President of South Africa
If he was able to reverse culturally the rot that has set in the ANC, Motlanthe says he would free the ANC national executive committee (NEC) from the dependency based on employer/employee relationship in government. He says he would do so by reducing the size of Cabinet while also ensuring that the majority of NEC members of the party are not in Cabinet or positions where they are a 'gift' of the head of state.
Secondly, Motlanthe explains that he would align the ruling party's constitution to that of the Republic of South Africa.
Thirdly, I would react to misdemeanors of a head of state in the same way I would to a councillor or mayor he adds.
The distinction that is drawn doesn't make sense to me. Many of the ANC members of Parliament who defended Nkandla, would never have done so had it been a loyal mayor or councillor.— Kgalema Motlanthe, Former President of South Africa
He made it clear that Zuma should step down in order to begin fixing the ANC and the country.
Given his (Zuma) high frequency of indiscretion and wrong-doing, it would create a new environment— Kgalema Motlanthe, Former President of South Africa
He (Zuma) just carries on. There is no atonement.— Kgalema Motlanthe, Former President of South Africa
Motlanthe stresses that who takes over from Zuma will have a mammoth task having to build the state from scratch.
