Motlanthe never mentioned the Guptas as a factor in the ANC crisis - analyst

Former SA president Kgalema Motlanthe has spoken out about the state of the ANC ahead of the December elective conference.

He was asked what he would like to see happening within the governing party.

Motlanthe says there's a need for change within the ANC, criticising the corruption and looting of state-owned enterprises.

Secondly, I would align the constitution of the ANC to the Constitution of the republic so that the relationship is clarified in the constitution of the ANC.

Thirdly, I would react to misdemeanours of the head of state in the same way I would if they were committed by a Councillor. The distinction that is drawn doesn't make sense to me because many of the ANC MPs who defended Nkandla would never done it had it been a local mayor or a Councillor.

Political analyst Prof Tinyiko Maluleke says Motlanthe was very candid when speaking about the state of affairs within the ANC.

He says it is surprising that Motlanthe never mentioned the Guptas as a factor in the current crisis that the ANC is facing.

What about Saxonwold in that equation, what is the role of the Guptas in appointing cabinet ministers? I just felt he could've taken this discussion a little further.

What Motlanthe and Co. are failing to articulate is how masterfully Jacob Zuma has taken control of the machinery of the ANC.
